We went to see “Gran Torino” yesterday, debated on blogging on it because it’s rated R.. But there is no nudity or sexual content. There is some violence and language. The movie is dealing with gangs so you would expect the language, may have been over the top a little though. But there is a good story line and deals with issues like revenge, life & death. We all have to consider what we would do sometimes if we are put in situation where revenge is something that we really want to take into our own hands.
I have been reading the Psalms and of course, since I’m reading thru the Old Testament, I also just finished Job.. I was struck by how much David continues to ask God to take care of the evil doers, to destroy them etc. Even Job is lamenting how God has forsaken him.. It can be a bit confusing because we’re continually told to turn the other cheek, to pray for them that abuse you, and to love them that despitefully use you, etc.
What is a Christ follower to do?
I believe we are to be exactly that, a Christ follower. If we are following Him and being called His then we should do what He would do! That’s not always easy, and there were times that He got angry, like when He threw the money changers out of the temple. But the difference here is we usually get angry because we’ve been wronged but Jesus did it because it was the temple, God’s house.. In other words, it wasn’t about Him, where when we get upset it is about us.
Now I know that doesn’t explain David. But David was under the law and before GRACE. And as the song “Grace Changes Everything” says, grace does exactly that. We are to exhibit God’s grace and forgive as we’ve been extended grace and forgiven. I know, easier said then done, but isn’t that what it’s all about anyway. Realizing we can’t do it without Him.
