It is a narrative based on the true story of Emma Wagner. Emma is a member of a Christian community that has a very strong leader, Wilhelm Kiel, with rigid rules, especially about women, and expects submission. Emma is a strong willed woman who is considered outspoken and a bit of a trouble maker.
Emma marries Christian Geisy, a man her father’s age, and the lead a group of scouts to find land for a new community location in the Washington Territory. Herr Kiel disapproves of the location so he takes the group he has brought out farther south into what become Oregon.
Christian is in an fatal accident which leaves Emma a widow with small children to raise. She is determined to make it on her own but makes some bad choices and eventually hasto relocate to the community in Oregon. Herr Kiel still attempts to rule with an iron hand however he and Emma reach an uneasy alliance.
Seeking and questioning Emma learns to use her circumstances as an important part of her faith’s journey.
